Tuscany along with Piedmont are the two leading wine regions of Italy. The grape synonymous with the region is Sangiovese that makes the base for of the regions wines. Most important appellations are Brunello, Chianti and Vino Nobile. All three make world class red wine with Sangiovese being the start. Recently the coastal part of Tuscany has become more important. The area is known as the Maremma and is home to the great Super Tuscans that have become some of the worlds iconic reds. The most Appellation in the Maremma is Bolgheri, home to wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Super Tuscans are wines that combine traditional Italian grape varietals and French varietals. These wines do not fit the criteria designates of Italian and over time were called the Super Tuscans that make up some of the worlds finest full bodied reds
