Today’s great value the 2018 Petrolo Torrione is a phenomenal wine. Petrolo is one of the most famous producers of Super Tuscans. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of Galatrona and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The winery focuses on making the finest possible quality. The great Carlo Ferrini consults, possibly Tuscans greatest winemaker, also makes Oreno, Casanova di Neri, Fonterutoli, La Massa, Brancaia and Brolio. Petrolo’s famous $100 plus wine is called Galatrona
What wine lovers do not know is Petrolo makes another wine that far less expensive under $30 a bottle that is every bit as good as Galatrona but is the smart buy, huge scores at a fraction of the price. That wine is the Torrione and in this great vintage, it is an absolute steal at the price point and definitely one of the smart buys of the vintage. It is one of the overachievers of Super Tuscans. Gets great scores, has been included in Wine Spectators Top 100 but is reasonably priced at $25.99. Again a great buy in a great vintage!
Petrolo Torrione 2018 (Super Tuscan) Tuscany; Italy
Red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards.” 95pts Suckling
Come from historic vines of the 70s and ones more recently planted with high density. Torrione has a deep red color and a large and magnificent bouquet of blackberries, violets and tobacco, mint and spices. A beautiful and impressive wine with a warm and generous fruit and soft and rich tannins in the long, long finish. Clear and precise, with beautiful aromas of plum, berries and chocolate. Full-bodied and refined, with a dense yet elegant palate of plum, chocolate and cherry. Long and caressing. Wonderfully polished. Very fine. Sangiovese and Merlot. An aromatic Torrione with violets, berries and spices. Hazelnut aromas as well. Full body, with pretty tannins and a delicate fruity finish. Nicely integrated tannins. Always beautiful.
