2018 Bodegas Valderiz Ribera del Duero “This velvety red offers generous layers of cherry reduction, espresso, clove and loamy earth notes that are flanked with licorice, graphite and floral hints. Shows freshness and concentration. Drink now through 2039.” 95pts WS

The Great Red Wines from Ribera del Duero, Spain rival the finest big reds in the world. Ribera del Duero is like the Napa Valley of Spain. If you like big, full bodied reds of the highest caliber whether from Napa, Bordeaux, Tuscany you have to try this wine. For $29.99 you will hard pressed to match this wine from anywhere.
Located on prime, chalky real estate in the village of Roa del Duero, Valderiz makes some of the most serious wines of the region. Their 60 hectares are spread across 35 different parcels, trained “en vaso” or goblet, which owner Tomas Esteban feels is best for the vines in this land of extreme continental climate. Vineyards are organically farmed with some biodynamic preparations employed as well. Here is just one indicator of how desirable these vineyards are: Pingus (maker one of Spain’s most expensive collectible wines) still calls every year looking to purchase fruit. This is classic Ribera del Duero Tempranillo full of bright, pure, intense berry fruit, framed by the region’s telltale sturdy structure. Fermentation takes place in tank and occurs naturally, with native yeasts and absolutely no additives used.
The 2018 Bodegas Valderiz Ribera del Duero has absolutely nailed it getting a monster 95pts by Wine Spectator. I tasted the wine yesterday and for the money you can not do better big red fans. Unfortunately very limited. First come first served!
