2020 Campo Al Mare Bolgheri (Super Tuscan)
2020 Campo Al Mare Bolgheri Bolgheri’s exceptional climate is moderated by sea breezes from the nearby Tirrhenian Sea, and the vineyards’ clay and sand soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The delicate Merlot was picked during the first half of September, while the robust Cabernets and Petit Verdot were harvested in the second half of the month. Grapes come from densely planted vineyards and low yields, which produce wines with concentration and complexity. Temperature-controlled fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and maceration on the skins takes 20-22 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. The wine is matured 12 months in one-year-old French barriques and at least 3 months in bottle before release.
Its deep, dark and dense colour opens the way to explosive aromas characterized by a vibrant balsamic note. On the palate it is velvety and enveloping, with a harmonious and balanced end.
The great Super Tuscans of Bolgheri from the coastal part of Tuscany make some of the greatest red wines of the world. This is the home of legends Sassicaia and Ornellaia that sell for big money, with some of the most famous families in Europe carrying the torch. One of the my favorite wines from the region is the wine I bring you today, and it is not $300 a bottle. It is under $27, with a huge 94pts from James Suckling, and a 36% savings. Now we all know the greatness of Sassicaia and Ornellaia, which are incredibly expensive. Today’s wine comes from a producer that over all my years in the business, reveals itself to me when I’m not looking for it. But when I make a point to taste their wines I am absolutely floored.
The wine is Campo Al Mare 2020 Bolgheri and pound for pound this is one of the greatest values you will find out there from one of the greatest wine regions in the world. If you love Napa, Bordeaux, Spain, or just hardcore big rich reds, this is an insanely good buy for the colder months. The value proposition here is outrageous. It is near impossible to find this type of quality at the price from one of the marquee wine regions in the world. Buy a case, pop a bottle, and see why this is one of our favorite values of the month!
