2012 Laurona Montsant
2012 Laurona Montsant The grapes used for Laurona come from old vines over 50 years old. It is a 2012 blend in which the Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Carignan. Aged for 12 months in new French Oak.
The Laurona has a deep purplish red color typical to its actual youth. Its aroma is penetrating, complex and intense. Initially, it recalls blackcurrant, plums, blackberries and roasted dried fruits. Gradually, as the wine opens up, complexity increases and penetrating spicy notes appear (vanilla, cinnamon …) and a pleasant floral background (violets). Its palate is opulent, velvety and very persistent. The abundance and balance of tannins provide a luxurious evolution over the next ten years.
Laurona Winery is definitely not just another Spanish wine estate, it’s another spectacular venture for renowned winemaker René Barbier of the spectacular Priorat region. His Clos Mogador was the first – and remains the leading – private winery in Spain dedicated to the production of highest quality wines from superb, old vine vineyards. These are wines are of remarkable depth and supple smoothness – a Barbier trademark. He is one of the greatest Winemakers in Europe today!
Until its recent explosive debut of wines on the international wine scene, Montsant, located in Spain’s Cataluña region (about two hours southwest of Barcelona) was best known for its Roman ruins. But it’s also the origin of the Latin name “Laurona” which dates back to when “Pliny the Elder,” an author and naturalist (and personal friend of the Emperor Vespasian) mentioned a single-vineyard (pictured) of the highest distinction – called Laurona. Now in the 21st century, winemaker-extraordinaire Barbier has successfully revived the heralded reputation of Cataluña vineyard some 2000 years ago!
A few weeks back, we held a wine tasting experience for our Spanish wine aficionados, and the wine that sold out immediately was this one!
