2012 Renwood Zinfandel Fiddletown, From Fiddletown, Sierra Foothills, California

Rich crimson red, this wine is loaded with aromas of cherry cola, oregano and butterscotch. Ample and integrated tannins give this wine a chewy, complex texture that combines with rich flavors of raspberries, black currant and luxurious dark chocolate. Cranberry oil lingers on the long finish.

Blend: 94% Zinfandel, 5% Syrah, 1% Petite Sirah

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured it’s title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the states’ diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, which sourced a journey to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California’s ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Growing some of California’s oldest plantings of Zinfandel, Fiddletown is a region of rolling hills surrounded by pine forests. While not many wineries reside within the AVA boundaries, a good number of Amador County wineries purchase Fiddletown grapes.

Surrounded by some of America’s oldest Zinfandel vineyards, Renwood Winery is located in the picturesque California foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Renwood produces world-class award winning wines from Amador County and the Sierra Foothills. Boston native Robert Smerling founded Renwood in 1993. Mr. Smerling fell in love with Amador County’s rich history and magnificent vineyards. A plan was set in place to build one of America’s premier Zinfandel wineries.

Wine production has grown from 2,500 cases in 1993 to over 100,000 cases today. The critics all agree Renwood produces consistently exceptional wines that cover the spectrum from big, bold, jammy Zins to wonderfully balanced Syrahs and Barberas.
