Wine Advocate: 93 Points:The eponymous 2015 San Román was produced with fruit from a dry and warm year, from one of the earliest harvests to date (but records are broken almost every year, and 2017 was even earlier). It’s always sourced from old, head-pruned and ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines on stony, limestone and clay soils in different villages of the appellation,including Morales de Toro, Pedrosa del Rey and San Román de Hornija. It fermented in wide stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 24 months in oak barrels, 70% French and the rest American It’s ripe, wide, hedonistic and generously oaked. Toro is considered one of the leading up and coming red wine regions of the world. The grape here is a strain of Tempranillo called Tinta de Toro that makes a darker, more richer and opulent example of red wines. If you enjoy big robust reds, you must try the reds from Toro. During a Charlie Rose TV broadcast Robert Parker was interviewed and asked, “Which up and coming wine region will make world-class red wines?” His answer, “The Toro region of Spain.”
Spain Wines is one of the most important wine producing countries in the world. The noble red grape of Spain is Tempranillo and it is prevalent in Spain’s most famous red wine regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Both regions makes some of the worlds greatest red wines. Wines from Rioja tend to be more elegant and medium bodied and Ribera del Duero make more richer, more powerful fuller bodied reds. Other important red wine regions are the Priorat and Bierzo. Spain is very important for incredible red wine values, some of the finest big reds at reasonable prices come from Spain. There is an abundance of old vine vineyards all over Spain that have the potential to make great wine at low prices and when made by talented winemakers offer incredible values. On the white side the two most important grapes are Albarino and Verdejo. Albarino mainly from Galicia is famous for its apricot nuances, and it is considered the finest seafood white wine. Verdejo stylistically is very similar to Sauvignon Blanc. Both whites are normally unoaked, clean and fresh, great aperitifs or with lighter fair. Also important to mention are the sparkling wines made in Spain called Cava, great alternatives to Prosecco are more expensive French Champagne and the great Sherries from salty dry to the most delicious sweet nectar.
