White Burgundy are on a plane all their own. Their complexity, layering and length make them some of the greatest wine experiences I have ever had. Great white Burgundy needs time in the bottle to truly show itself. Todays wine is a great example of that. The 2015 Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet is absolutely dancing in the glass right now. I had a bottle over the weekend, and was blown away by the wines depth of flavor, how it evolved with time in the glass, a stellar example. Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has established themselves as one of the defining estates of Chassagne-Montrachet. The domaine was born in 1985 through the marriage of Laurence Gagnard, heiress to the historic Gagnard-Delegrange estate, and Richard Fontaine, who incorporated his own share of his family’s vineyards. Their daughter Céline Fontaine and her husband, Fred Robert (ex-Armand Rousseau), run the estate with them, with Céline heading the team. The younger generations are making the finest wines in Burgundy and Céline is fortunate to be working with some of the top vineyards in Chassagne. The Chassagne was produced from 1.7 Hectares around the village of Chassagne and the 2015 is spectacular. 2015 is a great vintage for Burgundy, Parker’s WA hails the vintage as ‘outstanding’ giving it 94pts. Wine Spectator gave the vintage 95pts.
