2016 Fabio Oberto ‘La Collina Di Dioniso’ Barolo 750ML
2016 Fabio Oberto ‘La Collina Di Dioniso’ Barolo 750ML “Intense nose of fresh and dried red berries, together with dried leaves and dark, clove-like spice. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a concentrated bead of bright fruit and minerals. The tannins pull hard on the finish for now, so wait for this one. It’s structured and layered and definitely built to last. Hold until 2024.”
“Intense and bright garnet-red in color. Fruity aroma enhanced by a lively acidity with notes of goudron, leather, graphite evolving with the passing of time. Complex in mouth, with polished tannins, evident fruity flavors of blackberry and cherry, and firm structure in perfect balance. Long-lasting finish. Aged in large Slovenian Oak”
Barolo fans buckle up! This is the best deal I have seen on hard core, real deal Barolo in as long as I can remember writing this email to you. 2016 is one of the greatest Barolo vintages ever. Parker gave the vintage 97pts which is the 2nd highest ever in the last thirty years. The Wine Spectator gave the vintage 98pts which is the highest they have ever rated a Piedmont vintage. This great wine was a hold until 2024, so it’s just entered its drinking window. Now the wine on release sold for $55 to $65 a bottle. We have it down to $32.99 which is a massive 45% savings. The wine comes from La Morra one of the Sweet spots for great Barolo.
Andrea Oberto grew up working at his family winery in the small town of La Morra just South of Verduno but spent the early part of his adulthood as a truck driver outside of the family business. When his father passed unexpectedly, he returned home to manage the farm and devoted his life to tending to the 3 ha of vineyards he inherited from his father. In 1978, Andrea shifted the estates focus from supplying fruit to the local co-operatives to making its own wines. After 22 years working with his father at the family winery, Fabio Oberto, Andrea’s son, has started a business of his own: Fabio Oberto ‘La Collina di Dioniso’ gives continuity to the family’s vision of making wine true to the great terroir of the area.
Tasted last night this 2016 Barolo is fleshy, succulent and super-expressive, excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. This Barolo is delicious and for $32.99, a savings of 45% and from all-time great 2016 vintage. I strongly recommend.
