This wine is a remarkable find from our new friends at Sequum Wines. Sequum is a soil science term that describes the relationship of a vertical sequence of soil layers. Sequum wines express the life’s work of Paul Skinner, who holds a PhD in both viticulture and soil science. Paul is like a mad scientist, focusing on every minute detail when making his wines. Paul’s excruciating attention to detail, both in his Napa Valley Kidd Vineyard and in the cellar are apparent the first time I experienced the mind blowing bouquets of his wonderful wines. Paul Skinner has had a very long and illustrious career in the California wine industry. He is the consulting viticulturilist at Pride Family Vineyards, which was started by the legendary Bob Foley. The wines from Pride go anywhere from $150-$350 a bottle and have scored 100pts from Parker on numerous occasions.

The wine is a red blend that is sourced mainly from his 40 year old dry farmed vineyard Kidd Ranch in St Helena. The vineyard contains areas of two types of soil Bale and Cortina. Bale soil have access to more stored moisture during the growing season and, as a result, vine shoots are longer and leaves stay greener throughout the hot summer months. Vines in the Cortina soils have to work harder to maintain healthy leaves and fruit. As a result, the clusters and berries are smaller, tend to have more sun exposure, and is first to exhibit full color and flavor at harvest. This wine is a big rich supple mouthful of superb red wine. The price is superb and lovers of California big reds this wine will blow your palate away.

This gorgeous red blend is big, rich, concentrated and opulent with huge berry fruit in the nose with the perfect amount of oak. On the palate, this wine explodes with a delicious array of flavors. Bold blackberry, fresh cherry, raspberry and cassis blend beautifully with mixed sweet spice, sweet tobacco leaf, cigar box, baker’s chocolate, bramble, white cherry, red currant and toasty oak. The wine is opulently textured yet velvety soft in the mouth.
