Toro is a wine region in Castilla y Leon, north-western Spain. It is becoming increasingly well known for its powerful, full bodied red wines made from Tina da Toro (Tempranillo). Very small amounts of white wine are also made.
It is named for the town of Toro, an ancient settlement just 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the Portuguese border. It is located on the Duero River, which bisects the region’s northern half.
The Spanish word toro means ‘bull’. While it is unclear precisely how the town’s name came about, the bull is nonetheless a fitting symbol for these robust wines.
Viticulture here dates back to pre-Roman times. The wines were popular with royalty as far back as the 13th Century. King Alfonso IX of Leon said “tengo un Toro que me da vino y un León que me lo bebe”. This translates as “I have a bull who gives me wine and a lion who drinks it”.
The quality of the wine was recognised by the granting of DO status in 1933. This made Toro one of the first Spanish regions to achieve it. However the area suffering during and after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. Consequently the original DO became obsolete. The modern version was created in 1987.
