2017 Bodegas Breca Brega
2017 Bodegas Breca Brega; Calatayud, Spain
Coming from two different sites of incredibly old vines, the 2016 Brega is all Garnacha that was fermentedand aged 20 months in mostly new barrels. Deep purple-colored with powerful notes of ripe black fruits, melted licorice, incense, and violets, it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and opulent on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity, a core of sweet fruit, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful, elegant, yet incredibly sexy wine to drink over the coming 4-5 years.
Calatayud is a DO wine region in the southwest of the Aragon, northern Spain. It is located about 55 miles (90km) from the provincial capital, Zaragoza. This arid area of rolling hills is almost entirely encircled by the Sistema Ibérico, a vast system of ranges which separate it from all those areas of Spain sitting to the south and west of the mountains and massifs. Calatayud borders the Carinena DO to the east. The landscape in Calatayud is hilly and dotted with impressive architecture, with relics of the Roman, Moorish and Christian occupations. The region is mostly parched, although the many rivers that zigzag it provide respite. Almond, cherry and olive-tree sites are interwoven with vineyards, and the banks of the criss-crossing rivers are lined with apple, pear and peach trees. The earth is typically light in color – sandy yellow, pale orange or white.
