2017 Julien Marchand Nuit St Georges
2017 Julien Marchand Nuit St Georges Offering up a deep bouquet of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a textural attack, melting tannins, ripe acids and a deep core of sapid fruit. The finish is impressively long and nicely defined. Deeper and fleshier but it’s sufficiently elegant and expressive to be approachable sooner. 2022 -2032
The finest quality and sometimes at better prices are the smaller family run operations that make tiny amounts of wine that’s has the family name on the bottle and are made with the utmost care, to make the finest quality wines. One of these such houses, I have been following for twenty years, that makes spectacular quality but still affordable in Burgundy terms is Marchand Freres. They have been around since 1813, seven generations of continuous family winemaking and they are all about small production and high quality. They are based in the center of Gevrey Chambertin with a beautiful working cellar below. We tasted through their wines recently and fell in love with the Julien Marchand Nuit St Georges 2017. The wine is classic Nuit St George showing a more muscular, richer style and added concentration yet still maintaining spectacular layering complexity and length. The added time in the bottle has allowed the wine to start showing itself and can be enjoyed over the next ten years. What’s also great about the wine is its price. It is almost impossible to find excellent quality, pedigreed red Burgundy from the Cote de Nuit for under $60 a bottle. Treat yourself and experience the greatness real deal red Burgundy.
