2017 Ovid Napa Valley
2017 Ovid Napa Valley
The 2017 OVID Napa Valley Red Wine captures our feeling of gratitude with a rich and luxuriant expression. Brooding and broad with fresh notes of mulberry, cassis, anise, bay leaf, blackberryand licorice, this red wine will tell the tale of a most remarkable vintage for many years to come.
Blend: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot
Vinous (96/100)
The 2017 Ovid is rich, ample and seductive. Layers of dark Cabernet fruit wrap around the palate in a fleshy, racy Pritchard Hill wine loaded with character. Black cherry, blueberry, lavender, mint, espresso and sweet spice build as this racy, sumptuous wine gains volume with air. The 2017 is powerful, but it also retains terrific energy while showing the more vibrant style favored at Ovid these days. I can’t wait to see how it ages.
Jeb Dunnuck (95/100)
Deeper colored, the 2017 Proprietary Red Wine is based on 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that saw the same 60% new French oak for 21 months. It offers an incredibly classic, classy style as well as notes of black raspberries, cassis, jammy raspberries, toasted bread, dried flowers, and tobacco. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it’s another elegant, seamless wine that’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 20-25 years or more.
OVID is an organically farmed, 15-acre vineyard perched on a secluded mountaintop at 1,400 ft. elevation in the western reaches of the Pritchard Hill geography of Napa Valley. Here, they farm rocky red, volcanic soils to capture a true sense of place and craft long lived wines composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. They ferment only with native yeasts and bottle their wines without fining or filtering.
The Winemaker since 2006, Austin Peterson, combines his site-specific experience with a sense of experimentation, embracing a tension between classical and cutting-edge winemaking methods.
