2017 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red Jayson
2017 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red Jayson; Napa Valley, California
Winemaker Notes; Jayson Red Wine displays dense, vivid red color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, blackberry jam, and ripe strawberry play over underlying hints of anise with a warm touch of cassis. The deep fruit extends over a smooth palate supported by well-integrated tannins. This is an appealing, approachable wine, with mouth-coating intensity and hints of chocolate on the finish.
Blend: 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 15% Petite Sirah, 4% Cabernet Franc.
With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas.
Napa Valley, an hour’s drive north of San Francisco, California, is the most famous and prestigious wine region anywhere in the New World. Although a number of grape varieties are grown in the valley’s vineyards, the area is particularly known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. The classic “Napa Cab”, the archetypal Napa Valley wine, is a rich, oak-aged red with aromas of blackcurrant, boysenberry, liquorice, vanilla and smoky, bittersweet chocolate.
Pahlmeyer was founded in 1986, by a desire to be great by its eponymous creator Jayson Pahlmeyer. With a dream to create a California Mouton, Jayson and his partners spared no resource to make this dream a reality. Whether it was finding the perfect piece of land high atop Napa Valley’s Atlas Peak or covertly smuggling in Bordeaux cuttings, all pieces of Pahlmeyer’s history have led to its place as one of the top brand names from Napa Valley.
