2017 Steele Wines Red Hills Lake County Cabernet
2017 Steele Wines Red Hills Lake County Cabernet “Another impressive bottling from Jed Steele. A fresh herb aroma component makes this wine stand out in a crowd, and the palate is solidly varietal, with berry, spice and dried-herb notes in balance and finishing long and together. Tasty!”.
The 2017 Steele Red Hills Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon is smooth and deliciously persistent.
The fruit has an elegant feel, with notes of mulberries to darken the currant tones. There’s plenty of fresh fruit underneath to stay the course. (Best Buy)
Jed Steele is one of the last living legends of California Wine. Jed was Jess Jackson’s winemaker back in the day when they introduced the US Wine consumer to Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. This one wine was more instrumental in introducing the US to wine than any other. This wine pretty much started the fine wine revolution in America and is still a huge today. Jed now makes wine under his own name, making tiny amounts of awesome wine from select single vineyards. With his forty plus years in California wine he has the relationships not only to get access to the best grapes but also access at a low price. His wines are classic California, big, richly textured, big concentration and velvety smooth.
Jed has found a single vineyard a little further North in the Red Hills of Lake County that is making absolutely mind blowing Cab. This area with its high elevation and red clay soils, with a great \winemaker, makes hard core big reds that are marvelously rich and superbly supple. Andy Beckstoffer who owns some of the finest Napa Cabernet Vineyards like To Kalon and George 3 who’s wines sell for hundreds of dollars a bottle, just purchases land in the Red Hills AVA and is planting Cabernet. Names that you know that are purchasing this fruit are Duckhorn and Joel Gott. Jed has nailed it with his 2017 Steele Wines Red Hills Lake County Cabernet. At the price of $19.99 this is an absolute Steele of a Cabernet. I can tell you this wine is an absolute bargain for what’s in the bottle.
This is a blockbuster Cabernet, almost black in color, big rich opulent black fruits , 15 months in French and American oak adding toasty smoke components and complexity. The finish is soft and velvety with integrated tannins making the wine superb dinking now but will cellar well for another ten years. One of the great values. A must for bargain hunters who want real hard core Cabernet.
