Château Ferrande is a distinguished red. Its deep red colour hides aromas of dark fruit, liquorice, nuts, and a hint of cocoa. Initial elegance gives way to a full body, with soft tannins and notes of ripe fruit. The finish is lively with mentholated notes.
In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
Château Ferrande is located in the municipality of Castres-Gironde. It is a beautiful mansion rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. Then owned by Admiral Delnaud, the Castel family acquired it in 1992, after sixteen years of rental operation. The unique style of the property’s wines, combined with a constant search for the most demanding quality, have enabled Château Ferrande to acquire worldwide fame and enter the very “select” circle of the Union des Grands Crus.
One of Ferrande’s truly stunning features is its soil composition – pebbly Guntzian gravel – which lends the property’s wines their characteristic power and elegance. With a planting density of 9,600 vines per hectare, Château Ferrande’s main focus is on achieving maximum concentration. With its eyes fixed firmly on the future, the property is currently undergoing an ambitious renovation project.
