2018 Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard
2018 Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard This shows fabulous stone, dried apple and honey aromas that follow through to a full body, with fantastic focus and energy. Great acidity at the finish. Wow. The depth and length are incredible.
The majority of my favorite Napa chardonnays came from Aubert and from Hyde de Villaine, a winery created by the Hyde family of Napa and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée Conti. I found their opulence and intensity irresistible and hard to compare to just about any other chardonnay from around the world.
Opulent aromas of cooked apple, lemon rind, light praline and stone. Full-bodied with linear and lively acidity that runs through the wine. Energetic and bright with tightness and structure. Steely. Drinkable now, but better in 2023. 98pts Suckling
Greatness Begets Greatness. This is what happens when two great wine families come together. We are talking wine royalty. Two children decided to get married, the Hyde family of Napa and the Aubert de Villaine family of Domaine de la Romanee Conti. The Hyde family own one of California greatest single vineyards for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. California’s greatest Winemakers: Kistler, Marcassin, Hobbs, Aubert, Ramey make single vineyard designates wines from this great vineyard. The de Villaine family are stewards of the greatest name in wine, Romanee Conti. DRC is the benchmark of wine period. With the marriage the two families decided to make wine together, selecting some of the greatest blocks in the Hyde Vineyard, utilizing Romanee Conti’s winemakers, to make great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I have always been a huge fan. I have a tiny amount of the 2018 Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard and the wine is exquisite. Just like great white Burgundy the wine needs time in the bottle to really express itself and this wine is singing. This is one of the great Chardonnays. The wine combines the richness and power of the finest Cali Chardonnay with the added components of complexity, layering and length you only find in the greatest Grand Cru white Burgundy. This is a great wine, first come first served. Enjoy!
