2018 Pio Cesare Barolo
2018 Pio Cesare Barolo – A classic style Barolo. Excellent structure, harmony and elegance. Soft tannins and balanced fruit. Approachable, but with a very long ageing potential. Barolo is a great wine, which should not be described as a “basic” or “regular” Barolo, simply because it does not have any additional indication on the label.
Pio Cesare is one of the finest and best known producers in Piedmont. They are family owned and operated and producing world class wine since 1881. The Winery was started by Cesare Pio and he was instrumental in spreading the name Barolo and its great wines all over Europe. After the Second World War Giuseppe Bofa took over and his efforts these great wines gained fame and prominence throughout the world. Today fourth generation Pio Bofa runs the operation and the wines are better than ever.
2018’s are looking strong for Barolo and wine writers are still going through the wine, I tasted the 2018 Pio Cesare Barolo and it is spectacular, one of the best I have tasted in the last 10 years and that saying a lot. The wine is marvelously round and supple, tannins are extremely well integrated giving the wine a smooth, cashmere soft palate.
Pio Cesare’s Barolo is sourced from family owned vineyards in different zones of Barolo in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, Collaretto e Lirano), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava e Carzello), La Morra (Roncaglie), Barolo – Novello (Ravera) and from the 2015 vintage the recently acquired in Monforte (Mosconi).
The result is a wine that embraces and encapsulates the different terroirs and vineyards of Barolo. The result is a wine that has structure, harmony and elegance, soft tannins and balanced fruit that is drinking superbly in its youth but with a long aging potential. Our price on the wine is strong and I urge you to experience and learn about what the greatness of Barolo is all about. Is strongly recommend.
