Winemaker Notes: 2018 was a tremendous vintage in the Napa Valley and this new red wine cuvée shows all of the deep color, structure and complexity that one might expect from Howell Mountain. The generous portion of Merlot in the wine allows for a velvet, supple mouthfeel to go with the exotic nose, but make no mistake, this is a Bordeaux Blend from Howell Mountain with the ability to improve for decades in the cellar if called upon to do so.

Critical Acclaim V93 Vinous

The 2018 Cuvée Howell Mountain is gorgeous. Best of all, it will drink well early, while the Cabernets soften in the cellar. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, lavender, spice and leather all flesh out in the glass. The Cuvée marries the racy personality of the year with the character of Howell Mountain, a winning combination in my book. The Cuvée is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 4% Malbec, mostly from Robert Craig’s Candlestick Vineyard, with a bit of fruit from the Summit Lake property.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.

Robert Craig Winery showcases four Cabernet Sauvignons produced from Napa Valley mountain and hillside vineyards, including Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate vineyard, Affinity, a classic Bordeaux-style Cabernet, and powerhouse Cabernets from Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain. Each wine conveys a unique personality derived from the soils, climate and varietal characteristics of the growing region. Robert Craig has been a pioneer in mountain vineyard development for over 30 years. During the 1980s, he directed vineyard and winery development on Mount Veeder. Robert Craig wines debuted in 1992. The winery facility is located at 2300 feet atop Howell Mountain, with a Tasting Salon in Downtown Napa.
