2018 Tenuta La Massa Georgio Primo
2018 Tenuta La Massa Georgio Primo The 2018 Giorgio Primo represents a new level of finesse at La Massa. Powerful and dense in the glass with tremendous structure, Giorgio Primo is a terrific example of how compelling international varieties are in Panzano’s Conca d’Oro district. Creme de Cassis, spice, new leather, chocolate, and sweet spice build into the textured palate-staining finish. 97pts Vinous
The Fattoria La Massa 2018 Giorgio Primo is a wine of richness, volume and texture. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and maceration times last 26 to 28 days to add the lovely depth and creaminess you taste here. Black fruit, crushed stone, truffle essence and toasted spice emerge from the bouquet. The wine’s full-bodied structure and its freshness promise a long cellar-aging future. 96pts Parker’s WA
Giampaolo Mota, the eldest son of Neapolitan family became the “black sheep” because he decided not go into the family’s leather tanning business. His grandfather Giorgio was the only family member to support him in his venture into the wine business and thus, the top wine at La Massa carries his name. He is a man of intense passion and drive to make the best. Giampaolo studied in France with renowned oenologist Emile Peynaud, working in St Emilion and Pomerol where he developed his love of wine.
He selected one of the sweet spots of Tuscany to set up his winery, Panzano in the Classico district. This is the same place where greats like Fontodi and their great Super Tuscan, Flaccianello comes from. His vineyards are in the Conca d’Oro (trans. TheGolden Basin) of Panzano. This is the finest part of Panzano, some of the greatest vineyards in Tuscany. He hired the genius Stephane Derenoncourt, one of the most renowned winemakers in Bordeaux, to advise on vineyard management and in the cellar. He selected Carlo Ferrini (pictured left) to make the wine ), possibly the greatest winemaker in Tuscany today and whose clients include Tuscany’s finest wines: Casanova di Neri Brunello, Fonterutoli, Orma, Sette Ponti, Brancaia, Brolio, Petrolo, Sapio, Terriccio and San Fabiano Calcinaia.
The results have been spectacular, La Massa makes some of the greatest wines in all of Italy. Today I bring you his greatest wine, a pinnacle Super Tuscan, the 2018 La Massa Georgio Primo, one of the great wines of the tremendous Super Tuscans. La Massa made great wines across the board in 2018 and their top wine Georgio Primo looks to be legendary.
