2019 Espectacle Del Montsant Tinto Espectacle Vins
2019 Espectacle Del Montsant Tinto Espectacle Vins Clos Mogador team and the wine vinified by René in one special oak vat. The wine is stunning, with glorious ripe Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavours and of course the enormous depth and richness provided by the age of the vines.
About the producer
This outstanding new wine comes from a single, very steep vineyard planted with over 100 year old Grenache vines. The vineyard is located at La Figuera, on the northern edge of the Montsant D.O., and looks onto the famous Montsant mountain as well as having spectacular views of the Ebro valley and even the distant Pyrenees mountains 125 miles away. Hence the name!
The vines have been carefully tended by René Barbier’s Clos Mogador team and the wine vinified by René in one special oak vat. The wine is stunning, with glorious ripe Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavours…and of course the enormous depth and richness provided by the age of the vines. The project is jointly owned by Réné and Isabelle Barbier, Fernando and Marta Zamora (Oenologists and teachers at University of Tarragona), and Charlotte and Christopher Cannan.
With only 5000 bottles being made Espectacle is designed to be distributed through the prestige restaurant trade in Spain, and to high profile retail and restaurant accounts worldwide. There is no doubt that the age of the vines and the spectacular location of the vineyards will generate lots of interest, and the quality will establish Espectacle as one of Spain’s greatest red wines..a magnificent example of how special pure Grenache from 100 year old vines can be.”
The wines name Espectacle means spectacular which describes the absolutely exquisite terraced vineyard where this wine comes from. I have enclosed pictures from the top and the bottom of the vineyard. The vines are all over 100 years of age. The resulting wine is absolutely stunning, a pinnacle red, gloriously opulent with enormous depth and concentration. Only 400 to 500 cases are made depending on vintage and the wine is impossible to get going just about all to the finest restaurants in the world.
I visited the Espectacle vineyard, which is true to its name, truly spectacular. This is a joint venture between René Barbier from Clos Mogador, importer Christopher Cannan and some other friends. When René saw the vineyard, and once the owner was going to retire, he knew he had to buy it. This is one of those places that when you see them you realize they HAVE to produce great wine. And it does…
