The 2019 vintage for Brunello is one of the greats! Making up one of the Five B’s of Europe: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo; Barbaresco and Brunello, a great Brunello vintage is a key component to a complete wine collection. On 2019, Vinous On 2019 Brunello, “I’m happy to report that the current releases from Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation.” Kerin O’Keefe On 2019 Brunello, “Never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunello’s from a single vintage.” Many great winemakers are comparing it two greats of the past 1998 and 1990. O’Keefe thinks it’s better than 2016! Today I bring you the superb 2019 Fossacolle Brunello Di Montalcino. The wine has everything. A great vintage, great press, a great price for what’s in the bottle, insane drinkability and it is hard to get! Fossacolle is a small artisanal family run winery, with the Marchetti family taking care of all aspects from managing the vineyard, making the wines and sales.
Total vineyards for all wines is only 4 hectares and are located in the Southern part of Montalcino in the Tavernelle hamlet. The terroir is rich in clay and layers of tuff which is volcanic ash that hardens, ideal conditions to yield wines of impressive depth and longevity. Wines ages in both large Slovenian and small French barriques. Fossacolle simply crushed it in 2019. I could find absolutely no faults in this wine. Modern in style yet superbly balanced. Truly world class Brunello.
