2019 Petrolo Torrione (NY ITEM)
2019 Petrolo Torrione “Very perfumed with sweet-berry and fresh-flower aromas that already show brightness and beauty. Perfumed. Full-bodied with very well-integrated tannins and pure, vivid fruit at the finish. This is all in finesse and depth. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years.” 95pts Suckling
Come from historic vines of the 70s and ones more recently planted with high density. Torrione has a deep red color and a large and magnificent bouquet of blackberries, violets and tobacco, mint and spices. A beautiful and impressive wine with a warm and generous fruit and soft and rich tannins in the long, long finish. Clear and precise, with beautiful aromas of plum, berries and chocolate. Full-bodied and refined, with a dense yet elegant palate of plum, chocolate and cherry. Long and caressing. Wonderfully polished. Very fine. Sangiovese and Merlot. An aromatic Torrione with violets, berries and spices. Hazelnut aromas as well. Full body, with pretty tannins and a delicate fruity finish. Nicely integrated tannins. Always beautiful.
This wine is a great buy if I ever saw one. Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. Though virtually unknown even in the wine world, the Valdarno di Sopra denomination dates back to the days of the Medici family during the Renaissance, and the area has always been renowned for the winemaking potential of this tiny area of Tuscany. In the last fifteen years, Petrolo has established itself as one of Tuscany’s, and Italy’s, greatest wineries
For a Super Tuscan under $30, this wine has got more 90+ scores than any other Super Tuscan. Since 2004 the wine has not scored less than 90pts by Parker and in a top vintage like 2018, the wine is a definite buy!
Today’s great value the 2019 Petrolo Torrione is a phenomenal wine. Petrolo is one of the most famous producers of Super Tuscans. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of Galatrona and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The winery focuses on making the finest possible quality. The great Carlo Ferrini consults, possibly Tuscans greatest winemaker, also makes Oreno, Casanova di Neri, Fonterutoli, La Massa, Brancaia and Brolio.
Petrolo makes one of the greatest values found in all of Italy. The Torrione gets massive scores but is a fraction of the price of others. Torrione marks the beginning of Petrolo’s quality revolution. It is considered to be the true identity of Petrolo, made with a blend of grapes from all of the estate’s vineyards. With a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Torrione is also in keeping with Tuscan tradition of adding Bordeaux varieties to Sangiovese and instilling a sense of place in the French varieties, lending them a distinctly Tuscan character. Torrione is an absolute steal at the price point and definitely one of the smart buys of the vintage. It is one of the overachievers of Super Tuscans. Gets great scores, has been included in Wine Spectators Top 100 but is reasonably priced at $25.99. Our price is strong with a 35% Savings making this a great buy. I have always included Torrione in my cellar and is one of my go to wines when I want to serve incredible quality without breaking the bank. I strongly recommend!
