2019 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
2019 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve; Napa Valley, California “Delivers a lovely burst of pure, unadulterated cassis and cherry puree, with hints of violet, singed vanilla, loam and anise. A subtly inlaid graphite spine carries the finish. Beautifully proportioned. Accessible now, but there’s no rush at all. Drink now through 2036. (9/7/22)” 95pts WS
“Lifted and fresh red berries sweep upward with buoyancy, bringing forth darker layers of crème de cassis, camphor, and black cherries—all wonderfully nestled in a sublime and subtle French Oak infusion. The precision and sheer power of the 2019 Vintage is on wonderful parade here. Silky tannins, glorious depth of fruit, and racing dynamic tension fulfill the finish in a way that captures all the initial thrill (and then some).” Winemaker
Turnbull is surrounded by some of Napa’s greats Nickel & Nickel, Staglin, Round Pond and Opus One. They are in the Oakville part of Napa, home to Napa greats like Harlan and Dalle Valle. They have been in Oakville for some 40 years making it one of the more established wineries in Napa. Turnbull has dramatically improved their wines with arrival of 4th generation winemaker Peter Heitz, who has been with Turnbull since 2007 and was responsible for their benchmark 2010 Turnbull Fortuna Vineyard which scored 100pts from Parker. Parker comment that quality at Turnbull has gone, “from good to world class,” And the wines at Turnbull “are some of the most compelling wines being made in Northern California. Readers should take that to heart.” I have been able to secure a small allocation of the 2019 Turnbull Cabernet Oakville Reserve which just got a monster 95pts by Wine Spectator and will sell out fast. The wine is a blend of Turnbulls great single vineyards in Oakville like 100pt Fortuna Vineyard, Pierra and Leopoldina both making 98+pt Parker wines.
The 2019 is one of the great vintages from Napa. Galloni of Vinous comments; “the 2019s I have tasted so far are fabulous. The wines feel like they have a little more energy, power and depth than the 2018s” and the 2018 was a 96pt Parker’s WA vintage.
