Terlato Wines International’s beginnings trace back to 1938 in Chicago, with a retail store. That year, Anthony Paterno, father of Josephine Terlato (wife of Anthony Terlato), opened a grocery retail store on Grand and Western in the city’s West Side where Tony began to work. What started out as a small operation — where neighborhood customers would fill their pitchers with wine tapped directly from an oak barrel — eventually blossomed into a full-service wine, liquor and grocery store.
Anthony Paterno purchased an Illinois domestic wine distributorship, bottler and wholesaler called Pacific Wine Company (PW). At that time, Pacific Wine bottled bulk California Wines for distribution in Chicago. In the late 40’s and 50’s, Pacific Wine expanded under Paterno’s leadership to include estate bottled California wines (Charles Krug and CK) and European wines including Bolla, Fazi Battaglia, Lancers and Mateus.
