2020 Podere Sapaio Volpolo
2020 Podere Sapaio Volpolo
93+pts Parker’s WA
The Podere Sapaio 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo (a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot) is a terrific value. The bouquet opens carefully, first showing violet, iris root, dark cherry and potting soil. There are background tones of birchwood and cedar. I say buy this wine by the case, not the bottle. ~93 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Wild nose of blackcurrants, rosemary and grilled herbs. Medium-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and bright acidity. Savory. Fresh finish. Delicious now and over the next five years.
Volpolo Sapaio is a fraction of the cost of the super Tuscan wines from neighboring vineyards, this is truly a real deal steal. Parker’s WA call this a great vintage for Sapaio’s Volpolo. The wine has been on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Twice in the last five years. The 2018 won Tre Biccheri from Gamberro Rosso competing against other Super Tuscans that are are in the $200 a bottle plus price range. This is one of the great Cabernet based values you will find on the planet today, period!
Podere Sapaio was founded for wine production in the late 90s after Massimo Piccin convinced his father to invest and purchase parcels of land in Tuscany’s Bolgheri region to solely plant Bordeaux varietals. Today, this iconic winery is located among the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot vineyards planted on any terroir. We are talking icons like Sassicia and Ornelaia share the same terroir in Bolgheri. The land of the giants! With a spirit of constant innovation and experimentation, Podere Sapaio delivers with this wine of incredible complexity, character, and longevity. Ensuring the success of his wines, Massimo hired top Tuscan consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini to supervise production in both the vineyards and the winery. Ferrini consults for a number of Tuscan greats including Casanova di Neri, Brancaia, Sette Ponti, and Petrolo!
The 2020 Podere Sapaio Volpolo is true Super Tuscan, from the heart of Super Tuscan country, Bolgheri and neighbors Sassicaia the most famous of all Super Tuscans. The wine is predominantly Cabernet with a little Merlot and Petit Verdot. Parker’s WA comments, “I recommend buying this great value wine by the case, not by the bottle.”
