2020 Teso La Monja Almirez Toro When Charlie Rose asked Robert Parker which was the next wine new hot spot, Parker did not hesitate and responded, “The Toro region of Spain.” He clearly wasn’t joking. Today’s wine is one of Parker’s favorite value wines from Spain, scoring it since 2007 with 90+ points vintage after vintage. Since 1870, a period spanning five generations, the Eguren family has been dedicated to the production of the best wines in La Rioja. They have been able to maintain the traditional methods and at the same time, adapting them to the new advances in technology.
In 1998, when there were only 7 wineries in Toro, the Eguren family decided to open Numanthia-Termes winery. After Marcos Eguren(winemaker) was awarded 100 points by Robert Parker for his 2004 Termanthia, the luxury giant Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton decided to purchase the property; a clear sign of how far this region has come in a very short time.
The first thing Marcos did after having sold Numanthia Termes was to start up a new bodega in Toro under the name Teso La Monja. This bodega owns 100 hectares of 70 yr. old vines (with some of them being pre-phylloxera). The vineyards located in the districts of Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente, have been in existence for over 130 years. The soils are composed of clay and limestone, resulting in wines that feel fresh on the palate and have and elegant mineral finish.
The 2020 Almirez is a 1,000-case cuvée made with 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) that was aged for 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted back in 1949. These mature vines yielded only 1.8 tons of fruit per acre, but the fruit is of the highest quality. The wine got huge press: 94pts Galloni; 93pts Parker ; 92pts WE and 93pts Penin. This is a definite case Buy! If you love Napa, Super Tuscans, Bordeaux. This wine will blow you away at the price.
“Bright garnet-colored in the glass, this wine has aromas of anise, cassis and black raspberry with a touch of smoked charcuterie. In the mouth there are rich ripe fruit flavors and subtle floral tastes of dried lavender and crushed violet. It has a nicely round tannic structure and some pleasant grip in the midpalate. The satisfying finish offers soft notes of cherry and spice.” 94pts
