2021 Castello di Bolgheri Varvara
2021 Castello di Bolgheri Varvara This red is all about balance and texture, creating an ideal foil for its black currant, black cherry, licorice, rosemary and iron aromas and flavors. Refined tannins lend grip on the lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2038. WS
This shows notes of spiced cherries, currant leaf, dark chocolate and bark. Medium- to full-bodied. This has a weighty core of dark berries with compact and fine tannins melted into the wine. Focused and lengthy.
The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Varvàra shows inky black fruit and rich concentration with a hint of black olive or caper flower. This is another of the historic value wines of Bolgheri that is generous, thickly layered but also accessible. Parker’s WA
A lush cologne lifts from the glass, with notes of polished leather, blackcurrant, sour cherry, menthol, and rosewater. Full-bodied, it offers refined tannins, a rounded mouthfeel, and a well-balanced evenness through a rather long finish. JD.

They make a spectacular smart buy world class Super Tuscan. I have the 2021 Castello di Bolgheri Varvara, 93pts Wine Spectator down to $26.99. This is an unbelievably strong buy! The castle dates back to 1200 and has been passed down in succession to the current family of Count Zileri Dal Verme. Varvara is named in honor of the Baronessa Varvàra Wrangel, wife of Count Ugolino della Gerardesca, great grandfather of Federico Zileri Dal Verme, the owner of Castello di Bolgheri.
With the success of Sassicaia the vineyards were re planted to Bordeaux Varietals in 1997. Today agronomist and oenologist Federico Zileri Dal Verme and Alessandro Dondi run a state of the art Winery and vineyards rivalling the world’s best. Winemaker Allesandro Dondi has become a champion for the region of Bolgheri. He is called the ‘heart and soul’ of Italian Wine. Varvara is a Cabernet based Super Tuscan following the style and blend of the greats. 2021 is an exceptional vintage, yields were low and skins were thick, ideal for long lived wines with great concentration matched with balance and elegance. Galloni commented, “The 2021s in particular are some of the most exciting young wines I have tasted in more than 25 years of visiting the region.” The wine has superb balance and mouthfeel. At $26.99 this wine is a steal.
