2021 Gaja’s Ca Marcanda Promis
2021 Gaja’s Ca Marcanda Promis Promis opens with floral aromas of wild rose and violet, then it turns into a more earthy bouquet with hints of maritime pine, eucalyptus, roots, wet stones. The palate is fresh and juicy, with notes of red and black fruits – raspberry, wild strawberry and mulberry. Creamy, smooth tannins. The final is sapid with a peculiar smoky and spicy character. With its notes of rosemary, wild fennel, embers, Promis perfectly mirrors the Mediterranean scrubland which surrounds it.
Coming from a classic, Bolgheri vintage, Promis shows a bright, ruby-red color. The nose has hints of spice such as cinnamon and star anise along with pronounced red fruits like strawberry and black cherry. The tannins are juicy and persistent all culminating in a salinity that is a classic hallmark of good vintages in Bolgheri.
Angelo Gaja is probably the most famous and most recognized Italian Vintner in the world. He makes what many feel are finest Barbaresco and Barolo in piedmont that are some of the most collected and most expensive red wines coming out of Italy. Gaja decided in the 1980’s to make wine in Tuscany and the second vineyard he purchased he called Ca’Marcanda in Bolgheri. Ca’Marcanda is the Piedmontese term for “house of endless negotiations” and it refers to the many hours that Angelo Gaja spent convincing the property’s previous owners to sell the estate to him.
