2021 Marchand Freres Hautes Cotes de Nuits Red Burgundy
2021 Marchand Freres Hautes Cotes de Nuits Red Burgundy Fruit was whole cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel vats to maintain freshness and the beautiful red cherry notes. Later the wine was perfected for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (30 % New). The wine is sensual, seductive and ripe – a true hedonist’s wine. The nose is intoxicating, exuberant and full of inviting aromas of red and berry flavors, exotic sweet spices come into play with black tea leaves and anise seed. Aromas reminiscent to white truffles and cedar box just round up the experience. On the palate Marchand’s bottling offers glorious concentration of juicy black raspberry and pomegranate, extraordinary brightness just invites the consumer for a second sip. The finish is impressively long and harmonious. It will age and evolve beautifully over the coming decade.

Marchand Freres is one of my all-time favorite producers, the estate has been around since 1813. Marchand Freres is the quintessential Burgundy domain: small production, high quality. The estate has seen seven generations of continuous family winemakers. Pictured is JP Marchand who with his brother Denis run the Winery today. Originally founded in Morey-St. Denis, it was in 1983, that the domain bought a winemaker’s house in the very center of Gevrey-Chambertin, ostensibly for the beautiful working cellars underneath.
The domain has less than 9 hectares in some of the best vineyards in Cote de Nuits, like Clos de la Roche, Griottes-Chambertin and Charmes Chambertin. Production is miniscule with about 1000 cases to offer the world.
Today’s wine, the 2021 Marchand-Freres Hautes Cotes de Nuits was sourced from a single vineyard “LE Parc De Faye” located in the prestigious town of Vosne Romanee. The vineyard is Located at the top of the hills above the village of Curtil-Vergy, alongside the woods of the old abbey of Romanée Saint Vivant. Planted with tall vines, the terroir enjoys good sunshine and produces grapes that are always nicely ripe and concentrated.
The previous vintages of this bottling have been revered by the best wine publications in France like Guide Hachette des Vins, Gault & Millau, Dussert Gerber, Gilbert & Gaillard and in the Revue des Vins de France. Only 50 cases of the wine came into the US. The wine will be gone in a week and would be great on your Thanksgiving table. I strongly urge all Pinot Noir lovers to grab a case of this wine.
