White Wine from California, United States
Shibumi is a Japanese word which most nearly translates to “the pursuit of perfection though simplicity” or “Effortless Perfection”. Started by the late Don Ross, an aerospace engineer, was the project engineer for the Lunar Landing Mission on the Apollo. These tiny production wines are made by the great Thomas Rivers Brown who has made more 100pt wines in the last 15 years than any other California winemaker. The man is a living legend. Whatever he maked I hunt down to offer. Eugenia Keegan is a legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer in both California and Oregon. In 2003 Keegan invited Don to taste her latest Chardonnay’s from barrel. The last wine Dan tasted was a Chardonnay from the Buena Terra Vineyard in the Russian River Valley and Dan was blown away. Eugenia was moving to Oregon so he approached the owner of Buena Tierra Vineyards about buying the grapes. The owner explained that because the vines were 35 years old and grape production was down, he was going to replant the 2.4-acre block. Don offered to pay full production price for whatever grapes were harvested, an agreement which has continued for 16 years. The Shibumi Knoll Buena Tierra Chardonnay has proven to be among the best in the country. The 2005 vintage received a 97 from The Wine Spectator, tied for the highest score given California Chardonnay in the first decade of this century. The 2021 is a great vintage for the wine 96pts By JD. A pinnacle California Chardonnay, on the same level with the absolute best.
