Castello di Volpaia is a winery cleverly hidden in a historic hillside Tuscan town, a historic walled commune that dates back to the 1100’s. Tanks are tucked in crumbling churches, barrel halls lie below stone piazzas, and a subterranean “vinoduct” flows underneath it all. It is one of Italy’s magical places, not to mention one of Tuscany’s best producers of Chianti Classico. Volpaia’s wines consistently make Wine Spectator’s list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year”.
One of Italy’s greatest producers in the Classico zone from the famous region of Radda. From a medieval hilltop village at 450–600 meters — one of the highest elevations in Chianti Classico — Volpaia’s certified organic vineyards in Radda produce wine that carries altitude in every pour. High elevation means cool nights, slower ripening, and the lifted aromatics and taut acidity that define the Radda commune’s house style.
“Cool heights upwards of 600 metres with sunny exposures from southwest through to southeast make for a well-defined, vibrant annata. Scents of pepper-inflected wild dark and redcurrants lead to a juicy mouthful, where that small pinch of Merlot lends fleshy plum to the mix. Frisky, citrussy acidity meets easy going, rounded tannins for a harmonious package.” 91pts Decanter “Very pretty, classy wine that captures the essence of Radda in its bright, lifted personality. Crushed flowers, chalk, mint, white pepper and cranberry all grace this perfumed, lithe Chianti Classico” 90pts Vinous
