This Is The Best Buy On Left Bank Cabernet Based Bordeaux I Have Seen This Year
Massive 94pts Wine Spectator; Great Vintage; Huge Savings
There is only one huge problem with this wine. At the last minute our allocation was cut in half. This will sell out very quickly. This is one of the up and coming wines from Bordeaux from the Graves region of Bordeaux, home to world beaters like First Growth Haut Brion, Lamission Haut Brion and Pape Clement. Today’s wine is an absolute win! Spectacular quality, huge score, great vintage, a savings of 33% and a great team that has put this all together. The Chateau Clos Marsalette 2020 Rouge is great Bordeaux. Clos Marsalette is located in Martillac in the Pessac Léognan designation, it was started in 1992 and is jointly owned by Count Stephan von Neipperg and Didier Miqueu. Both men come from a very successful wine background in Bordeaux. Miqueu’s family owned the great Larrivet Haut Brion and Count Stephan von Neipperg owns some of the greats in St Emilion including Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte. Von Neipperg has brought his team in to make this wine. The vineyard sits magnificently on gravelly rises deposited eons ago by the Garonne. Offering a great diversity the subsoil is composed of marine sediment from the Miocene and Pliocene epochs (5 to 15 million years ago) in the form of shelly sand with a bit of clay, fawn-coloured sand, and multi-coloured clay.
The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux is superb. Suckling commented. “If you buy or drink a bottle of top-rated 2020 Bordeaux, you are going to be more than happy. In fact, you most likely will be elated.” Eric Kohler, technical director of Chateau Lafite Rothschild calls the vintage, “2020 is the great classic of today,” comparing 2020 vintage to recent great like 2010, 2005 and 2000. Suckling hails the vintage as a classic. The general consensus is that the 2020 Bordeaux vintage is a great vintage, so much so, it is likely to be considered a legendary modern classic. Parker gave the vintage an outstanding 95pts.Chateau Clos Marsalette is very rare in its brilliant quality and its low price. This wine is on the up and will only be getting more expensive with each passing year. The wine is all about spectacular full black fruits, balance and roundness matched with elegance. The wine totally over delivers at its price and will provide glorious enjoyment over the next 15 years. I wish we had more to offer. I strongly recommend!
Nicely rendered, this manages to belie the vintage’s heat, with a focused and streamlined core of dark currant and blackberry fruit studded with licorice snap, violet, alder and tobacco notes along the way. 94pts WS
So bright and vivid with flowers, orange peel, and currant aromas that follow through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Purity. You see the cabernet sauvignon clearly. 94pts JS
The 2020 Clos Marsalette is clearly outstanding, with terrific red and black fruits as well as some earthy truffle and spicy, tobacco-driven aromatics. Based on 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this medium to full-bodied, silky, textured 2020 is going to over-deliver over the coming 15+ years. 93pts JD
