The Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf is one of my all-time favorite Neufs and one of the greatest in the world. Over the past decade Jean-Paul Daumen has emerged as one of the most compelling winemakers in all of France. This is a wine of opulence and concentration, pure decadence and definitely full bodied. This wine is at the top of the Chateauneuf pyramid matching pure power with spectacular seamlessness.

2016 #6 Wine on Wine Spectator’s Top 100
Shows subdued, hidden power and a gorgeous texture, though this is just beginning to unfurl. Warm earth, brown bread and toasted anise notes infuse a perfumed core of red fruit. Racy acidity keeps the tension high, and there’s a licorice snap detail on the finish, which is defined, smoky and long. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Best from 2027 through 2040.
