Jason Drew has established himself as one of the new rock stars of California wine. He trained with winemakers Craig Williams at Joseph Phelps, John Kongsgaard at Luna, Jeff Baker at Carmenet, Cathy Corison of Corison, and Brian Babcock of Babcock Vineyards. He decided to make high elevation, cool climate wines and chose the Mendocino Ridge AVA, high above the Anderson Valley and just 3.3 miles from the ocean at 1,250-feet elevation. He started Drew Family Cellars in 2000 and the results have been spectacular. Today I bring his Drew Syrah Cuvee Nicolas 2023, a huge 98pts by Jeb Dunnuck and absolutely delicious. Jason drew his inspiration from the great Northern Rhone’s: Cote Rotie and Hermitage and he has nailed it. The aromatics blew me away, the mouth feel, the spectacular texture you only find in great Syrah. If you love great US Syrah, dare I say Cayuse and Sine Qua Non, this will definitely impress at a fraction of the price.

Honoring co-owner Molly Drew’s maiden name, the 2023 Syrah Cuvee Nicholas is blended from one barrel each from the estate, Perli, and Valenti vineyards. A wealth of combustible spice aromas and flavors jump out, from anise and white pepper, adding to the complex swirl of lifted salinity. Both floral and meaty, it’s a tightly coiled wine with firm tannins, lots of structure, and some medium-bodied girth with incredible aging potential. Enjoy best 2028-2038.
