Gibbs Cabernet Sauvignon Three Clones 2023  

This wine blew me away when I tasted it. When I found out what we could sell it for. I could not believe the value. The hunt was on and now I know why. This Cabernet drinks like a Cult Cab that goes for big bucks. The wine is made by the Gibbs family who acquired the property back in 1970. The reason this wine is affordably priced is because the vineyards have been owned by the family for decades with no debt and they pass the savings on to their customers.  They have supplied grapes to 100pt wineries like Chappellet an Cakebread. They own two different vineyards and this wine is a blend of the two: Centra Vineyard (start of the Mayacama mountain range) near Revana and Hourglass whose wines sell for $150 to $200 and Cross Creek (base of Howell Mountain) across from Hundred Acre’s Ark Vineyard which sells for $700. This wine should be in these price ranges. The wines name comes from the fact that is made up of three famous clones of Napa Cab: 6, 15 and 337. The blending of the clones and the two vineyards allow the wine to maximize its complexity and depth. Over time this wine and these vineyards will become part of new operations and prices will soar. The nose is a sophisticated interplay of cassis, black cherry, and a hint of graphite, underscored by subtle cedar and vanilla from well-judged oak integration. The nose smells blackberry, dark cherry, Santa Rosa plum at the peak of ripeness, boysenberry and dark mulberry. Its non-fruited notes are of dark cocoa powder, dark chocolate and as the wine opens further, it opens to layers of sweet baking spices. At three years post vintage, this is easy drinking juice, filled with layers of ripe fruits including blackberry, boysenberry, dark cherry, Satsuma plum and Himalayan purple mulberry. Finishes with a note of cocoa powder, dark chocolate, a light toast and a gentle warmth deep on the palate. The tannins are fine grained, perfectly rounded spheres which express an overall creamy and lightly chalky and dusty character.  Bold yet balanced, it is a classic that showcases both power and refinement.
