PETROLO ‘GALATRONA’ MERLOT R
Petrolo ‘Galatrona’ is a prestigious and deeply expressive Tuscan Merlot, regarded as the estate’s “Grand-Cru” of Merlot and one of Italy’s most distinctive interpretations of the variety. Produced exclusively from the Galatrona vineyard in the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, the wine is made from 100% Merlot, sourced from low-vigour Bordeaux clones planted from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. Situated at approximately 300 metres above sea level on south-eastern exposures, the vineyard is characterized by clay-rich soils combined with galestro, marl and sandstone, providing the foundation for the wine’s concentration, structure, elegance and persistence. Petrolo has produced Galatrona since 1994, with organic certification and a focus on natural, sustainable vineyard practices.
In the glass, Galatrona reveals a deep, intense ruby-purple colour, often approaching an opaque garnet depth at the core. The bouquet is remarkably complex and aromatic, opening with ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, black plum and dark cherry. Floral notes of violet, lavender and dried rose petal add elegance, while wild herbs and subtle balsamic nuances provide freshness. As the wine opens, deeper aromas of tobacco, cigar box, cedar, black liquorice, dark chocolate, espresso and earthy forest-floor tones emerge. Fine French-oak maturation contributes polished notes of vanilla, sweet spice and gentle toast, creating an aromatic profile that is powerful yet exceptionally refined.
On the palate, Galatrona is full-bodied, concentrated, powerful and beautifully balanced, combining Merlot’s natural generosity with impressive Tuscan freshness and structure. Ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry and dark plum form a rich core of fruit, joined by nuances of black cherry, violet, liquorice and wild herbs. Layers of dark chocolate, mocha, espresso, cedar, tobacco and baking spice develop across the palate, while subtle earthy and mineral tones add further complexity. The wine possesses substantial yet polished tannins, supported by vibrant acidity that gives definition and energy to its generous body. Its approximately 18–20 months of maturation in French-oak barriques, one-third of them new, adds carefully integrated notes of vanilla, toast, cedar and warm spice, while bâtonnage during the first six months contributes additional texture and finesse.
The finish is exceptionally long, persistent and elegant, carrying layers of dark berries, plum, liquorice, cocoa, tobacco, cedar, dried flowers and savoury spice across the palate. The combination of ripe fruit, lively acidity and finely polished tannins gives the wine remarkable length without heaviness. With bottle age, Galatrona can develop further tertiary complexity, revealing leather, cigar box, dried rose, forest floor, earthy minerals and deeper balsamic nuances. It is a powerful yet graceful expression of Merlot that demonstrates how beautifully the variety can translate the distinctive character of its Tuscan vineyard.
Food Pairing: Galatrona is ideally suited to richly flavoured dishes that can match its depth and polished tannic structure. Pair it with dry-aged ribeye, grilled beef tenderloin, roast beef, braised short ribs, lamb shoulder, venison and wild boar. It also works beautifully with Tuscan specialties such as wild-boar ragù, slow-cooked game, truffle and porcini dishes, roasted mushrooms and hearty meat-based pasta. For cheese, serve alongside aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano-Reggiano or other mature hard cheeses, whose savoury intensity complements the wine’s dark fruit, oak and mineral complexity.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to reveal the wine’s layered fruit, floral aromas, savoury character and integrated oak. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of breathing or decanting, allowing its substantial tannins and aromatic complexity to unfold gradually. Older vintages should be decanted more carefully to separate any sediment while preserving their delicate tertiary aromas. Serve in a generous Bordeaux-style red wine glass to fully appreciate Galatrona’s concentration, silky texture, dark fruit and exceptionally long finish.
