POGGIO NARDONE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO R
Poggio Nardone Brunello di Montalcino is a refined and traditionally structured expression of Sangiovese Grosso from the hills of Montalcino, Tuscany. Produced exclusively from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, the wine comes from vineyards situated at approximately 400 metres above sea level, planted on distinctive marl and limestone-rich soils that contribute freshness, aromatic complexity and firm structure. The grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks followed by malolactic fermentation in oak, before the wine matures for approximately three years in French-oak barrels. This extended maturation allows the vibrant fruit, savoury character, tannins and oak nuances to integrate into a beautifully balanced Brunello.
In the glass, Poggio Nardone Brunello shows an intense ruby-red colour with garnet nuances, reflecting its extended maturation and classic Sangiovese character. The bouquet is expressive and layered, opening with ripe cherry, sour cherry, red berries and dark berry fruit, followed by elegant floral notes of rose and cherry blossom. As the wine develops in the glass, more savoury aromas emerge, including leather, tobacco, dried herbs, earthy soil, flint and subtle balsamic nuances. Hints of vanilla, cinnamon, liquorice, dark spice and gentle toasted oak add depth and complexity.
On the palate, Poggio Nardone Brunello is full-bodied, generous and beautifully structured, combining the bright acidity of Sangiovese Grosso with a substantial yet polished tannic framework. Ripe cherry, cranberry, raspberry, blackberry and plum unfold across the palate, accompanied by notes of tobacco, leather, liquorice, dried herbs and baking spice. Subtle nuances of vanilla, cinnamon, coffee and toasted oak reflect its long maturation, while earthy and mineral tones add savoury depth. The wine possesses a rich, silky texture with firm, fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity that keeps its considerable concentration balanced and energetic.
The finish is long, persistent and savoury, with lingering flavours of ripe cherry, dark berries, tobacco, leather, liquorice, spice and earthy mineral tones. Its combination of vibrant acidity and structured tannins provides excellent length, while bottle ageing can bring further complexity in the form of dried flowers, forest floor, truffle, leather, tea leaves and mature tobacco. The overall impression is powerful yet elegant, with the traditional Tuscan character of Sangiovese supported by carefully integrated oak and impressive persistence.
Food Pairing: Poggio Nardone Brunello is an excellent partner for rich Tuscan and Italian cuisine. Pair it with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, grilled ribeye, roast beef, beef tenderloin, lamb, venison and wild boar. Its vibrant acidity works particularly well with pappardelle and other pasta served with wild-boar ragù, rich tomato-based sauces, porcini mushrooms, truffle dishes and slow-cooked game. It also pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, Tuscan sausages and mature cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow its fruit, floral character, acidity and savoury complexity to show at their best. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of decanting, giving the tannins and oak time to soften while allowing the cherry, tobacco, spice and earthy aromas to unfold. Older vintages should be decanted more carefully to remove sediment while preserving their delicate tertiary character. Serve in a generous Brunello, Burgundy or large Bordeaux-style red-wine glass to fully appreciate its aromatic depth, elegant structure and persistent finish.
