Seña is one of Chile’s most celebrated icon wines, born from the pioneering partnership between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi in 1995. Produced in the Ocoa area of the Aconcagua Valley, Seña was created with the ambition of showing the world the exceptional potential of Chilean terroir. It is a sophisticated Bordeaux-style red blend with a distinctly Chilean identity, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Carménère, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The hillside vineyards, located around 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, feature well-drained gravelly and rocky soils of volcanic and colluvial origin, while the cooling influence of the Humboldt Current helps preserve freshness and balanced acidity.
In the glass, Seña reveals a deep ruby to garnet colour with attractive violet reflections. The aromatic profile is beautifully layered, opening with ripe redcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. Floral notes of violet and rose petal mingle with fresh herbs such as sage, rosemary and subtle dill, while delicate layers of cedar, tobacco, graphite and sweet spices add depth. With further aeration, nuances of cocoa, dark chocolate, liquorice, black olive and fine oak emerge, creating an elegant balance between vibrant fruit, savoury complexity and refined spice. The 2021 vintage in particular displays remarkable aromatic purity, with red fruit, cassis, rose petals, cloves, spice and cocoa.
On the palate, Seña is refined, concentrated and beautifully structured, combining the depth of a premium Bordeaux-style blend with the freshness of its cool Aconcagua setting. Layers of red and black fruit — including cherry, raspberry, cassis, blackberry and plum — form the core of the wine, followed by notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, liquorice, graphite and savoury herbs. Vibrant acidity gives the wine energy and precision, while fine-grained, polished tannins create a silky and elegant texture. Carefully integrated French oak contributes subtle cedar, vanilla, spice and toasted nuances without masking the purity of the fruit. The result is a wine of remarkable balance, combining richness and concentration with freshness, finesse and tension.
The finish is long, persistent and remarkably graceful, with lingering flavours of cassis, dark berries, red fruit, cocoa, tobacco, herbs, graphite and delicate spice. The wine’s refined tannins and refreshing acidity provide an excellent structural framework for extended ageing, while its aromatic purity allows additional layers of cedar, leather, tobacco and savoury earth to develop over time. Seña is designed to reward patience, and its combination of concentration, freshness and fine-grained structure gives it impressive cellaring potential.
Food Pairing: This sophisticated Chilean icon wine is an exceptional companion to grilled ribeye, dry-aged beef, roast beef, lamb shoulder, beef short ribs and venison. Its polished tannins and vibrant acidity also complement slow-braised meats, roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, barbecue dishes and rich mushroom preparations. For cheese pairings, choose aged Cheddar, Comté, mature Gouda or other firm, full-flavoured cheeses that can match the wine’s depth and structure.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow the wine’s fruit, floral, herbal and savoury complexity to express itself fully. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of decanting, giving the cassis, blackberry, cocoa, cedar, spice and graphite notes time to unfold. Serve in a large Bordeaux-style red wine glass to enhance its aromatic precision and fully appreciate its silky texture, refined tannins and exceptionally long finish.
