Solaia Antinori is one of Italy’s most prestigious and iconic Super Tuscan wines, produced by the Antinori family at the historic Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Tuscany. First created in 1978, Solaia comes from a south-west-facing vineyard of approximately 20 hectares situated at 350–400 metres above sea level, with rocky soils rich in alberese limestone and galestro. The wine is a sophisticated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, combining international structure with the distinctive freshness and savoury character of Tuscany. Solaia is produced only in exceptional vintages, reflecting Antinori’s commitment to quality and terroir.
In the glass, Solaia displays an intense ruby-red colour with elegant violet reflections. The bouquet is exceptionally complex, opening with concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and purple plum. Fresh notes of mint, myrtle and Mediterranean herbs bring aromatic lift, while white pepper adds a subtle spicy edge. With time in the glass, luxurious layers of cocoa powder, dark chocolate, liquorice, cedar, tobacco and delicate toasted oak emerge, creating a beautifully layered nose that balances ripe fruit with refined savoury and mineral complexity.
On the palate, Solaia Antinori is rich, powerful and remarkably polished, combining impressive concentration with freshness and finesse. A dense core of blackberry, cassis, black cherry and plum is complemented by flavours of dark chocolate, liquorice, cocoa and subtle coffee. The Sangiovese contributes vibrant acidity and savoury depth, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and spice. The wine’s silky, finely textured tannins create a luxurious mouthfeel, while approximately 16 months of ageing in new French oak contributes carefully integrated layers of vanilla, cedar, toast and warm spice. The result is a beautifully balanced wine in which richness and structure are seamlessly integrated.
The finish is exceptionally long, persistent and elegant, with lingering flavours of dark berries, liquorice, cocoa, dark chocolate, cedar and delicate spice. Fresh acidity and polished tannins maintain precision throughout the finish, while subtle mineral and herbal notes add further complexity. With bottle age, Solaia can develop deeper tertiary nuances of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, earth and truffle, making it a wine with outstanding cellaring potential. Its combination of concentrated fruit, refined oak, freshness and structural finesse has established Solaia as one of Tuscany’s benchmark fine wines.
Food Pairing: This sophisticated Super Tuscan is an exceptional companion to Bistecca alla Fiorentina, grilled ribeye, roast beef, braised short ribs, roasted lamb and venison. Its structure and acidity also complement classic Tuscan dishes such as wild-boar ragù with pappardelle, slow-cooked game and rich mushroom or truffle preparations. For cheese, pair it with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano-Reggiano or other mature hard cheeses, where the wine’s dark fruit and savoury complexity can shine.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow the wine’s dark fruit, herbal, mineral and oak character to express itself fully. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of decanting, giving the concentrated fruit and firm tannins time to soften while allowing layers of cocoa, liquorice, cedar and spice to emerge. Serve in a large Bordeaux or premium red-wine glass to enhance its aromatic complexity and appreciate its silky texture, precise structure and exceptionally persistent finish.
