Toro; Spain
93pts Parker
Robert Parker was recently asked which is the next great red wine region in the world and unequivocally stated that it is Toro. Toro is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world and today’s wine is a killer red that at the price is pretty much impossible to beat. The wine is brought to us by Telmo Rodrigues, one of the greatest winemakers in Spain today. Telmo’s wine was the number one wine on James Suckling’s Top 100 Spanish Wines of 2021 and he has made 100pt Parker wine’s. Telmo studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux and was winemaker at his family winery in Rioja, the great iconic Remelluri, before setting off on his own in the early 1990s to discover new vineyards and regions all around Spain. The Telmo Rodrigues Gago 2018 is from his Toro operation. The wine is sourced from the oldest vines from the best plots that are grown by eight families that have worked with Telmo for many years, coming from the villages of Argujillo, Villabuena, and Morales. The grapes used for this wine are Tinta de Toro (the local name for Tempranillo). The grapes are grown in terraced vineyards on sandy loam and sandstone. The results are spectacular, the wine absolutely blew me away at the price, 93pts Parker’s WA, save 37%, a rich superbly rich, concentrated red that seamless, cashmere smooth with time in the bottle and absolute joy to drink. Spectacular value for money.
