TENUTA SAN GUIDO ‘LE DIFESE’ R
Tenuta San Guido ‘Le Difese’ is an elegant and approachable Tuscan red from the renowned estate behind Sassicaia, created to express the distinctive character of the Bolgheri territory through a fresh, balanced and highly versatile style. First released in 2002, Le Difese combines the structure and dark-fruited character of Cabernet Sauvignon with the lively acidity and distinctly Tuscan personality of Sangiovese. The vineyards are situated at approximately 100–300 metres above sea level on varied soils marked by limestone, marl, pebbles and clay, with south and south-west exposures. Carefully selected grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in stainless steel, followed by maturation in French-oak barriques previously used for Sassicaia and Guidalberto, giving the wine subtle oak complexity while preserving its youthful fruit and freshness.
In the glass, Le Difese reveals a bright, vibrant ruby-red colour with delicate purple reflections. The bouquet is expressive and inviting, opening with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry and red berries, complemented by fresh red flowers and subtle violet nuances. Mediterranean aromatic herbs add a distinctive Tuscan character, while gentle notes of spice, powdered chocolate, tobacco and delicate roasted tones bring additional depth. Hints of balsamic herbs and fresh woodland nuances gradually emerge with aeration, creating an aromatic profile that balances generous fruit with savoury Mediterranean complexity.
On the palate, Le Difese is smooth, juicy, fresh and beautifully balanced, with a medium-bodied structure that makes it particularly approachable. Ripe cherry, blackberry, redcurrant and wild berry flavours form the core, supported by Sangiovese’s vibrant acidity and Cabernet Sauvignon’s subtle depth and structure. Notes of Mediterranean herbs, liquorice, cocoa, tobacco and gentle spice develop across the palate, while the wine’s soft, well-integrated tannins provide definition without overwhelming its fruit-driven character. Its French-oak maturation contributes restrained nuances of cedar, toast and warm spice, allowing the natural freshness and drinkability of the wine to remain at the forefront.
The finish is fresh, savoury and pleasantly persistent, leaving lingering flavours of ripe cherry, blackberry, redcurrant, Mediterranean herbs, spice and subtle chocolate. A gentle balsamic character adds freshness and length, while the polished tannins and lively acidity keep the finish clean and harmonious. Rather than relying on sheer power, Le Difese impresses through its balance, elegance and versatility, making it an excellent introduction to the style of Tenuta San Guido and a wine that can be enjoyed relatively young while still developing additional complexity with bottle age.
Food Pairing: Le Difese is exceptionally versatile at the table and pairs beautifully with grilled steak, roast beef, beef burgers, veal, pork, lamb and Tuscan-style sausages. Its lively acidity makes it particularly well suited to tomato-based pasta, Bolognese, marinara dishes, pizza with rich toppings and herb-seasoned preparations. It also complements grilled vegetables, roasted mushrooms, cured meats and medium-aged cheeses, making it an excellent choice for relaxed Mediterranean meals as well as traditional Tuscan barbecue.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to highlight its vibrant fruit, freshness and savoury complexity. A young bottle generally needs only 20–30 minutes of breathing before serving, allowing the blackberry, cherry, herbs and spice to become more expressive. For older vintages, gentle decanting can help separate any natural sediment while allowing the wine to open gradually. Serve in a generous Bordeaux or Italian red-wine glass to fully appreciate its aromatic freshness, polished tannins and elegant finish.
