The Best Argentine Malbecs Rival The Finest Full Bodied Dry Red Wine In The World
This Is One Of Them
Argentine Malbec has developed a wine profile all its own. Malbec is one of the Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet and Merlot that was used for blending purposes like Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the great red wines of Bordeaux. Malbec was brought to Argentina centuries ago and this is where the story of Argentine Malbec goes on its own journey. When the vines became too old or Wineries wanted to plant new Malbec vineyards. Instead of bringing in new cuttings from other parts of the world. They replanted and regrafted the original Malbec that was brought to Argentina back at the beginning. The results is a Malbec that has developed its own flavor profile and bouquet, unique to Argentina and better than the original that can be often coarse and tannic.
One of the finest I have ever tasted is today’s wine the Zuccardi “Finca Canal Uco” Malbec 2021, 96pts Parker’s WA, 96pts Vinous and 97pts Decanter. Zuccardi was founded in 1963 by Alberto Zuccardi but it was his grandson who Sebastian who has taken Zuccardi into making some of the finest Malbec in Argentina and big red wine in the world. Zuccardi Finca Canal Uco is coming from a single vineyard, the first vineyard planted by Sebastian Zuccardi in a new terroir, Paraje Altamira. The wine has superb purity and depth, all silk and satin with polished tannins, seamless. Lovers of the best big reds; Napa, Bordeaux or Super Tuscan, this wine will blow you away. Our price is strong. Experience the Hillside difference.
97pts Decanter; 96pts Parker’s WA; 96pts Vinous; 95pts WS
The 2021 Finca Canal Uco leads with a wonderfully pure, deep core of black and purple fruits with savory, tar-like accents and lifted herbal, underbrush-tinged top notes. The palate is generous and lush yet balanced with an alluring, deft gracefulness that straddles burly, bramble-laden fruits with deep concentration and no excess weight. The finish is charred and smoke-driven, marrying strident, persistent and gently chewy tannins with focused, energetic acidity and cascading length. A beautiful combination of ripe fruits, burly structure and poise, this could use a year or two in the cellar to further integrate its tannin structure, but I suspect it will be fascinating to keep track of over the following decade. 96pts Parker’s WA
