2013 Spottswoode Cabernet 1.5L, Napa valley, California
St Helena is one of the Napa Valley‘s key subregions, located in the shadow of the 4,345 feet (1,325m) Mount Saint Helena, from which the small town takes its name. The AVA, given in 1995, specializes in rich red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and, to a lesser extent, Merlot. These are made by some of California‘s most notable names, including Beringer, Joseph Phelps, Turley and Duckhorn Vineyards.
Spottswoode is a wine producer located in St Helena, in California’s Napa Valley. It releases only four wines every year, with the focus being on Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.
The estate itself was established in 1882 by George Schonewald, who planted grapes and built the Victorian farmhouse which is there today. It came under its current ownership in 1972 when the Novak family bought the estate, and their first Cabernet Sauvignon wine was released in 1982. Today, there are 18 hectares (45 acres) of vines planted, most of which are Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards have been certified organic since 1992.
