2016 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore

2016 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore  Grattamacco is one of the highest estates in Bolgheri, located just beneath the village of Castagneto Carducci. It has a distinctive contribution of 15% Sangiovese to the blend, along with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This indigenous grape gives the wine a particular freshness and drinkability, rejuvenating the tension of the classic Bordeaux varieties. In 2016, Grattamacco has exceeded itself, with aromas of elegant, youthful red currant fruits integrated with citrus notes and cedar wood. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced, and more immediately drinkable than some of the other top samples. It has delicious tension and ripeness, with a mediterranean character and a hint of kiwi on the finish. 97pts Decanter

The aromas offer a subtle mix of black currant, violet, cedar, iron and sweet spices, evolving into an elegant profile, with superb balance and harmony. Complex and intense, this seems approachable even at this early stage, yet it will only gain with time in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. A huge, expansive wine, the 2013 Grattamacco exudes power. The Cabernet Sauvignon speaks with an especially assertive voice in both the wine’s flavor profile and overall structure. Sweet herb, menthol, licorice and leather overtones meld into a core of dark fruit as the wine continues to gain breadth in the glass. Beams of supporting acidity and tannin add backbone as well as energy. The 2013 is an impressive Grattamacco. It is also likely to require at least a few years in bottle. The 2016 vintage for the great Bolgheri Super Tuscans was spectacular, 98pts by Parker for the vintage and truly great wines were made. The Super Tuscans from Bolgheri make up some of the greatest, collectible and iconic wine there is. Now we all know the greatness of wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia that sell $200 to $400. Todays wine in 2016 performed as well as others that are two to three times the price. The wine come from the famous Grattamacco which makes some of the finest red wines in Italy. Second to Sassicaia only in historical chronology of the Bolgheri territory, the estate of Grattamacco planted its first roots in the Bolgheri in 1977 and produced its first wine in 1982. Claudio Tipa, who also owns the famed Poggio di Sotto estate in Montalcino Castello and ColleMassari in Montecucco, and Luca Marrone (Parker of Italy), working together with consultant Maurizio Castelli (see Below), are producing wines of great distinction that make up some of the greatest Super Tuscans of our time that showcase and celebrate all that the Bolgheri embodies. Their flagship wine the 2016 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore is one of the great wines of this great vintage getting a huge 97pts by Decanter and 96pts by Parker’s WA which comments that this no doubt the finest Grattamacco they have tasted in a decade. This wine rivals the great full bodied red wines from around the world. Absolutely glorious!
