2016 Luigi Baudana Barolo “Baudana Estate”; Piedmont, Italy

Winemaker Notes; A deep red in the glass introduces aromas of pure cherries and plums accented with spice, graphite, eucalyptus and licorice. Warm and dry character with firm tannins balanced by a fresh and gentle acidity. A unique soil composition with blue clay translates in a wine with a powerful elegance.

RP95 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate; The Luigi Baudana 2016 Barolo Baudana opens to a saturated and dark garnet color. Of these three Baroli from Luigi Baudana, this is perhaps the most complete and round. It shows the mineral signature that we got in the Cerretta (also from Serralunga d’Alba) with a bigger fruit profile, complete with sweet cherry and blackberry preserves. In fact, this wine feels a bit riper, sunnier and sweeter than the others in this grouping. Last year, in the 2015 vintage, this was my favorite wine. But in this tighter and more linear 2016 vintage, I prefer the Cerretta by a very small margin. Both wines are excellent. 95pts
Nebbiolo is the grape variety behind the top-quality red wines of Piedmont, northwestern Italy, the most notable of which are Barolo and Barbaresco.
Barolo is a traditional hillside village in the rolling hills of Piedmont, northwestern Italy. The vineyards and cantine (wineries) there have long been famous for producing some of Italy’s very finest red wines. The region’s signature grape variety, Nebbiolo is the sole variety permitted for the wine which takes the village’s name.
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates in Langhe. With just 4 quality hectares, they are located in some of the most prestigious Barolo crus in Serralunga d’Alba. The wines of the Luigi Baudana collection are an expression of powerful, genuine and true-to-terroir wines, expressing the best of the Nebbiolo grape. Baudana, the family name, the historical cru and the hamlet, is a sign of just how deep the family’s roots are tied to this land.
