2017 Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino
2017 Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino; Tuscany, Italy
Winemaker Notes; Ruby red with violet hues. The intense and complex aromas lead back to small red ripe fruits and plum jam followed by toasted and vanilla notes. Excellent structure, full bodied and balanced. The enveloping tannic structure leades to a fruity pleasant, lasting aftertaste.
JDJeb Dunnuck; The 2017 Col d’Orcia Brunello offers notes of pine resin, black cherry, and dried strawberry aromatics. The palate is concentrated and compact, with dried tomato leaf bitterness and tobacco. The structure is not shy, with a rich core of fruit, bold tannin upfront and just as much acidity to match. This is a bold wine for the 2017 vintage, packed with sun-kissed warmth. It commands time in the cellar, so drinking is recommended over 2026-2041.
Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most famous and prestigious wines. In Tuscany, its homeland, it perhaps ranks alongside Chianti Classico. On global markets it seems to command even greater attention.
Sangiovese (or Nielluccio in Corsica), a dark-berried vine, is the most widely planted grape variety in Italy. Virtually synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany, and all the romanticism that goes with the territory, Sangiovese is the core constituent in some of the great names in Italian wine. Italy’s love affair with Sangiovese – and indeed the world’s – is generations old, though recent grapevine research suggests the variety is not as ancient as once thought.
Col d’Orcia is an esteemed producer in the Tuscan region of Brunello di Montalcino, making DOCG-designated wines from Sangiovese. The estate is located on the outskirts of the village of Montalcino in the Siena district of Tuscany. It has been under the ownership of a number of noble families with centuries of history, but did not produce wine in a significant way until the 1900s.
