2017 Domaine Berthet Rayne Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Cadiac Fresh blackcurrant, licorice and flowers on the nose. Juicy, fresh and intensely flavored, with firm acids contributing to the impression of backbone. Quite aromatic in the mouth.

Whereas northern Rhône wines are produced primarily from Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, southern Rhône believes in more diversity. Wines here are mostly red blends of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre. Primary white wines include Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and Picpoul. Unlike its northern counterpart, southern Rhone’s climate is Mediterranean and its terrain turns into a rugged garrigue scrubland.

The most famous appellation by far is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which uses up to 13 grapes varieties in its red blends. Tavel is the only appellation producing solely rosé wines. Beaumes-de-Venise and Vinsobres produce mostly red wines, while Gigondas and Vacqueyras produce both rosé and red blends. Lirac produces red, rosé, and white wines. Fortified sweet Vin doux naturel wines are produced in Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, and Rasteau produces a sweet fortified red wine.
