2018 Banfi Bolgheri Rosso Aska Deep ruby red with violet reflections. Bouquet: Red berries, blueberries and plum jam are followed by hints of tobacco and licorice. Taste: The wine is well rounded, with velvety tannins and a persistent finish.

Vermentino is a white wine grape grown in various locations, and under various names, around the western Mediterranean. Strongholds include northwestern Italy, southern France and the neighboring islands of Corsica and Sardinia.

It goes by various names, among them Pigato in Liguria, Favorita in Piedmont and Rolle in Provence, although there is long-standing disagreement over which of these are synonyms of Vemenrtino and which are distinct varieties in their own right. Whatever the truth, Vermentino wines, Pigato wines, Favorita wines and Rolle wines have a lot in common, most obviously their refreshing acidity and attractive aromas of peach, lemon peel, dried herbs and a whiff of saline minerality.

Toscana IGT is the most popular and famous of Italy’s Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) titles. It encapsulates the entire region, with the Toscana IGT label permitted on wine produced in any of Tuscany’s ten provinces.

Castello Banfi was founded in Tuscany in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani. It had its origins in their father’s business, Banfi Vintners, which was founded in 1919 and was America’s leading Italian wine importer at the time. Today, Castello Banfi has vineyards throughout the northwest coast of Italy, from Piedmont, to Chianti Classico, Bolgheri and Montalcino.
